It was well after midnight when Valerie and Cade finished cleaning up the kitchen and retired in the living room to talk. They talked about the emotional toll of the day but had not talked about making love the prior night. It was, however, on Cade’s mind when he patted his thighs indicating for Valerie to come sit on his lap.

She did so without hesitation, then melted against the hard contours of his chest. His lips descended on hers in a tender kiss that swiftly progressed into a hungry one. Valerie was left wondering when they had established that level of non-verbal communication. But she was beyond thinking when he stood up and balanced her in his arms before climbing the stairs and going up to her bedroom.

He deposited her onto her bed before stripping off his own clothes to join her; her last coherent thought before descending into paradise was the phone call she’d received earlier. She decided against telling him about the missed call to her home phone while she was out looking for him.

It not only had a Maine area code, but it was also Dr. Porter’s direct telephone number.
